Clarity on Artificial Super Intelligence x Risks
Leading AI experts warn that industry leaders could build systems powerful enough to pose an extinction risk within the next two to five years.
CASIR is a proposed fund to foster an ecosystem of organizations that work to clearly communicate these risks, whether they address policymakers, the public, academics or journalists.
Our Mission
CASIR's mission is to spread Clarity on the extinction risk from ASI. Only few organizations exist today that inform policymakers and citizens alike about the extinction risk from ASI, for two reasons:
- Many organizations that want to work on reducing ASI extinction risk struggle to get funding.
- Many funders are under the illusion that their money funds work on reducing extinction risk, but instead their money regularly flows to organizations playing respectability games and not mentioning ASI extinction risk.
To address this and build an ecosystem of organizations that prioritize clarity on extinction risk, CASIR aims to create a new funding vehicle. This fund will help funders donate directly to such organizations, giving them confidence their money will be used to reduce extinction risk from ASI, and not diverted into other causes.
Discover our MissionOur Charter
CASIR exists to ensure that funders are donating to organizations that work to spread awareness on extinction risks among both elites and general audiences.
Our Charter addresses this through:
Clarity
CASIR only funds organizations and projects that clearly state the risk of extinction from ASI in their communication.
CASIR will not fund projects about other AI risks such as deepfakes, or about loss of control without ever mentioning extinction risks.
CASIR will not fund organizations that do not have at least one page on their website that clearly outlines the extinction risk from ASI.
Straightforwardness
CASIR only funds organizations and projects that are straightforward and unequivocally work to reduce extinction risks from ASI.
What CASIR particularly favors are awareness, advocacy and information campaigns on ASI extinction risk and a prohibition on the development of ASI.
CASIR will not fund multi-step "theories of change" predicated on dissimulating one's true beliefs on extinction risks.
Professionalism
The extinction risk posed by ASI is a serious topic which should be treated with a commensurate degree of dignity by its spokespeople.
Furthermore, it is all too easy for any party to chase after virality by being shocking or appealing to people's worst instincts. CASIR stands opposed to such behavior, which pollutes public spaces and penalizes organizations which strive to play fair.
Thus, CASIR will only fund organizations that commit to enforcing professionalism norms on its public-facing staff. Namely, they are expected to not manufacture scandals for attention, to not wantonly insult named individuals, and to refrain from publicly sharing explicit material.
Our Partners
Organizations associated with CASIR are divided into two categories:
Member Organizations are primarily focused on the extinction risk from ASI, and CASIR aims to support them through unrestricted funding.
Partner Organizations have extinction risk from ASI as one of their topics of interest, and CASIR may only fund them for specific projects that follow the principles outlined in the Charter.
Our Governance
CASIR will operate two organizations: a tax-deductible 501(c)(3) Donor Advised Fund, as well as a 501(c)(4) for lobbying purposes.
Two committees will sit on these organizations: a Grant Committee to make funding decisions and to manage CASIR, and an Advisory Committee with veto power to address the Grant Committee's blind spots. This way, we hope to build a balance between staying faithful to the precise vision of funding activities that are directly and clearly about reducing the extinction risk from AI, and avoiding self-reinforcing groupthink or extreme filter bubbles.
